Job Summary: 

UNC Health is seeking exceptional candidates to join our UNC Health Enterprises team to drive innovation, transformation and business diversification efforts of the organization. The Health Enterprises department houses our Center for Health Innovation and acts as an internal consulting group focused on accelerating innovation across UNC Health and developing a portfolio of new businesses and strategic investments. The Health Enterprises team is part of UNC Health’s Transformation and Experience division – a group focused on transforming healthcare and achieving our vision and mission as One UNC Health. 

Specifically, the System Manager of UNC Health Enterprises will: 

  • Evaluate, design, test-learn, implement, launch and scale new B2B and B2C growth strategies within digital health, pharmacy benefits management, laboratory, and other healthcare spaces 
  • Partner cross-functionally to identify client/customer needs and develop value-based opportunities that will contribute to a broader innovation/growth roadmap 
  • Personally lead a portfolio of initiatives related to innovation and new businesses that support new services, products or customers different from traditional care delivery via organic or inorganic growth 
  • Conduct in-depth and complex analysis using primary and secondary market research on customers, competitors and markets in order to tell a product-value story and develop business justification 
  • Support development of strategic priorities and focus areas for investment in new businesses 
  • Conduct financial modeling, develop market analyses and assess opportunities based on investment criteria 
  • Develop business cases, track progress against key milestones, make and implement value-based metrics and analysis to measure outcomes 
  • Engage multi-disciplinary internal and external advisors and experts to support projects and programmatic work including clinical, legal, technology, data/analytics, health care operations, and other expertise based on project needs 
  • Deliver project excellence, provide accurate estimates, anticipate roadblocks, and find ways to overcome those to help the team push forward. 
  • Develop external relationships to stay abreast of market and industry trends, and identify new potential opportunities •Lead and/or support presentations to the Board, internal committees, and other leadership groups in support of ongoing activities 
  • Promote and support an environment and culture for the ideation and implementation of innovative solutions and new business opportunities 
  • Responsibilities include, but not limited to: contributing and supervising the problem identification, solution development, and planning of multiple new strategic products and services that leverage UNC’s core assets, capabilities and delivery channels 
  • Develop data books and pitch decks for internal and external audiences 

Job Responsibilities: 

1. Portfolio Management: Develops and manages a portfolio of innovation initiatives and new business ventures including partnerships with third parties. Collaborates closely with leaders and peers to identify and develop opportunities. Manages the process from ideation through launch. Evaluates a variety of opportunities for investment including creation of new businesses, investments in startups or other companies, acquisitions, and partnerships. Works with leaders to develop the overall strategy for investment in innovation and new businesses. 

2. Leading Change: Proactively assesses the need for change and effectively leads change initiatives. Communicates change effectively and appropriately. Serves as a role model by demonstrating commitment to innovation and continuous improvement in organizational performance. Takes a long-term view and builds a shared vision with others. Provides effective thought leadership to senior leaders across the organization. 

3. Leading People: Provides direction and leadership to team members within UNC Health Enterprises. Leads project teams on complex engagements and is viewed as the point person for multiple ongoing projects at a time. Directly supervises one or more staff in the department. Provides an inclusive workplace that fosters the development of team members, facilitates cooperation and teamwork, and supports constructive resolution of conflicts. Establishes a high performing team environment. Articulates common goals and communicates how individual roles contribute to team success. Develops the ability of others to perform and contribute to the department by providing ongoing feedback and opportunities to learn.

Other Information

Education Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate discipline. 

Professional Experience Requirements: Five (5) years of relevant experience (e.g., finance, strategy or consulting) or two (2) years at a top tier consulting firm with two years of other relevant work experience. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements: Desired skills include excellent critical thinking, problem solving, relationship building, presenting and communicating skills, and the ability to function with limited guidance and be comfortable supporting projects both alone and in teams. The ideal candidate will have strong financial, project management, and change management skills, be analytically oriented, and be capable of translating analysis into storylines and narratives. This individual should be comfortable working both individually and collaboratively with teams to meet project deadlines and support strategic planning processes. Strong Excel and PowerPoint skills are necessary.
