[SC00] The Director, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) reports to the SVP & Chief Human Resources Officer and works closely with FirstEnergy’s DEI Council, senior leaders and other key stakeholders on the development of DEI strategies to support workforce planning, engagement, and talent management initiatives and create inclusive, high-performing work environments.

This leader has primary responsibility for designing, developing, implementing, and monitoring policies and programs to build the diverse workforce of the future and advance our culture of equity, inclusion and belonging, in alignment and support of the company’s overall business strategy.

This leader ensures organization-wide awareness and the successful integration of diversity concepts and culture into decision making, processes and behaviors, and creates and maintains an environment that is sensitive to the various needs of a diverse workforce.

The Director, DEI establishes and stewards employee networks that promote the enhancement of an organizational culture that embraces diversity of ideas, backgrounds, interests, and life experiences and encourages dialogue to further organizational learning about difference.

This role is a blend of subject matter and functional expertise in diversity, equity and inclusion, change management across a large and complex organization, and influencing leadership, employee behavior and organizational culture.

Responsibilities include: Strategy and scope Leads the design, development, change management, and execution of DEI strategies that enable FirstEnergy to attract, retain, engage, and promote a diverse workforce that meets the talent needs of our evolving business.

Integrates DEI practices into all existing HR and talent management policies and practices including recruiting, hiring, training, development, and leadership succession planning strategies.

Works across the organization, in partnership with key senior business and function leaders, to prioritize, develop, and deliver programs that build workforce diversity, promote a culture of equity, inclusion and respect, embed DEI into decisions and processes across the organization, and ultimately drive improved business performance.

Leadership Leads a small team of DEI professionals and effectively delivers results through others by providing guidance, influence and direction to key stakeholders such as the DEI Working Group, Implementation Teams, EBRG leaders, etc.

Partners with the DEI Council Chairperson to ensure the DEI Council plays a critical role in creating an organization that prioritizes, supports, and invests in diversity, inclusion, and equity.

In addition to the specific responsibilities of its function, this position is an integral part of the Human Resources leadership team which focuses on people solutions for our 12,000 employee
– strong workforce.

As part of that leadership team, this position develops, creates and influences broad people solutions.

Thought Leadership, benchmarking and best practices Serves as a thought leader and Subject Matter Expert in DEI and workforce culture transformation disciplines.

Serves as FirstEnergy’s chief representative on diversity matters at the industry and national levels.

Represents FirstEnergy externally regarding DEI philosophy, strategy, expertise, and other DEI-related matters.

Maintains and continues to develop expert knowledge of DEI by researching effective diversity practices, monitoring industry developments, evaluating emerging trends, and conducting benchmark comparisons.

Attends key conferences/events and networks with relevant external professional organizations to identify best practices and determine applicability to FirstEnergy.

Builds relationships with other companies to learn about best practices and DEI strategies and staying current on emerging issues and trends in diversity, equity and inclusion.

Employee Feedback, Education and Engagement Leads the annual process to obtain employee feedback through the design and execution of the DEI Employee survey, and other venues for employee feedback.

Develops and implements the strategy to communicate survey results and drive the survey action planning in partnership with the DEI Working Group.

Provides leadership and strategic oversight to the Employee/Business Resource Groups (EBRGs) Develops educational curriculum, strategies, and tools for various audiences (employees, leaders, HR, etc.) to advance the DEI efforts in alignment with our strategy, accomplished through collaboration and partnership with consultants and internal experts, as necessary.

DEI metrics and reporting Develops metrics, scorecards and analytics for measuring the effectiveness of company D&I initiatives; interprets and reports DEI data insights and survey results to the DEI Council, the CEO, and the Board of Directors.

Develops annual DEI Key Performance Indicator (KPI) goals and targets to drive leadership accountability and ownership and provides ongoing KPI support throughout the year.

Works across FE Works cross-functionally with the HR Business Partners, Recruiting, Learning & Development and Organizational Effectiveness teams, other areas of HR, and across business units (Community Involvement, Supplier Diversity, External Affairs, etc.) to advance our DEI strategy.

Partners closely with Corporate Communications to engage employees in DEI efforts through meaningful communications that create awareness of internal and external initiatives, events, and progress.

Social justice Works across internal and external stakeholder groups to drive initiatives that enhance social justice/racial equality within our company and in our communities.

Leads DEI event response team to proactively monitor external issues related to DEI and respond internally and/or externally in a timely fashion.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources or related discipline and a minimum of 10 years relevant work experience required; advanced degree and/or certifications related to DEI desirable.

Relevant experience includes demonstrated success in leading enterprise-wide projects, change management, influencing and driving culture change, effectively communicating internally and externally with diverse audiences at all levels, and focused experience in DEI.

Proven success in a formal leadership role (minimum of 5 years) including modeling the FE values and behaviors, leading a team of experienced professionals, and influencing at an enterprise-wide level.

Prior experience at the Manager or above level preferred.

Subject matter expertise in DEI preferred, including processes and tools for engagement, Employee Business Resource Group participation/leadership, development and delivery of employee surveys and interpretation and communication of survey results; understanding of DEI metrics and KPI(s), and racial equality and social justice.

Demonstrated experience in strategic planning and execution of work with proven ability to think broadly about the organizational system and practices and drive strategy and plans that create culture change and enterprise impact through influence.

Strategic, high-level thinker who understands and can effectively articulate the business case for diversity and inclusion; can effectively develop and implement a corporate-wide strategy and work effectively across the organization to deliver results.

Proven ability to drive cultural change; experience working effectively across a complex organization; demonstrated understanding of organizational dynamics and ability to influence broadly to achieve desired outcomes.

Skilled advisor to senior leaders with experience presenting, interfacing with and advising leadership across all levels with strong understanding of FE business, workforce, culture and history.

Experience communicating with senior management, leaders at all levels, and internal and external stakeholders with a track record of successfully influencing an organization.

Experience leading and working with cross-functional teams to deliver results.

Creative and innovative thinker with strong ability to plan, drive, and manage cultural and behavioral change and drive action through strong influencing skills.

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with executive presence; excellent collaborator and relationship builder who can bring together diverse opinions/groups and influence without direct authority.

Collaborative team player, with the ability to navigate potentially sensitive situations and topics.
